In early 2023, a few volunteers met with a small group of women at the Wassenaar AZC to practise conversational English.
We quickly realised these sessions were about much more than vocabulary — they were a vital space for people to connect and feel welcomed.
As word spread, our casual gathering grew into a structured programme open to all residents.
We quickly learned to adapt to the daily realities of center life, making every class count even when space and resources were limited.
Today, as COA centres open and close across the region, our community moves to where we are needed most.
While our geography shifts, our purpose remains: using language to build a meaningful and supportive community for everyone involved.
Our model
Our programme is intentionally-designed to provide a highly customised and flexible community support through language instruction for adults with diverse backgrounds.
Our programme is deeply rooted in the local reception centres and shaped by the energy and talent of volunteerswith their unique backgrounds and perspectives.
entirely volunteer-run
We blend conversation, grammar and vocabulary into real-life practice. Using English language instruction methods, adult learning and trauma-informed principles, we make learning accessible at every level.
method-based teaching
The world of asylum reception changes quickly. Our model is designed to respond dynamically, letting us scale up and down smoothly as needed.
scaleable design
We don’t wait for the perfect classroom environment, but adapt to the daily realities of centre life, turning any available space into a welcoming place to connect and learn.
flexible approach
Our model offers a sense of comfort for our students — a welcoming space that brings reliability and predictability during a stressful and uncertain time.
consistent routines
Our educational approach treats every adult learner with respect, inviting them to bring their rich life experiences into a safe environment where we all try, fail and learn together.
welcoming everyone
Our organisational structure
At English for All, our structure is designed to support our teams on the ground and keep everything running smoothly.
💙 Volunteer communityThe bedrock of our programme are our volunteers. They join us across our various sites, generously dedicating their time, experience, and passion.
💙 Location coordinatorsEvery teaching location is guided by volunteer coordinators. They support the local team, welcome new volunteers and students, oversee day-to-day programming, and act as our main focal points with COA.
💙 Programme leadership & managementOur core leadership teamcoordinates the overall vision, strategy, and daily operations. Led by our director, this group is made up of specialised volunteers who bring their professional backgrounds to all essential organisation roles.
English for All started with just a few good people and has since grown into a courageous community that constantly inspires me. With my background in adult literacy and education in humanitarian emergency situations, I help shape our teaching model which blends distinct educational practices to leverage the natural strengths of our volunteers and meet the needs of our learners.
